FIELD NOTES ON THE METAPHYSICAL HORROR OF DCA UNPREDICTABILITY, AMTRAK PURGATORY, THE TRAGEDY OF A THREE-RATE BROOKLYN SHACK
Our departure flight from DCA to JFK was liquidated by a meteorological non-event—a civilized, thin drizzle that in Brasília wouldn’t even suffice to clear the dust from an open-air parking lot. We spent five hours under the neon glare of the terminal—a temporal sentence engineered by the aviation industry to remind the traveler that his status apps are a statistical blague.
When the cancellation became absolute, the survival phase commenced. A chaotic sprint ensued toward Union Station—that cathedral where American capitalism performs a historical cosplay of European rail glory—to secure the final two available seats on the last train. Thus, we were instantaneously transformed from international consultants into logistical refugees.
The locomotive, scheduled for 21:00, delayed its departure until nearly 02:00. Punctuality, it seems, like Western democracy, is a magnificent concept primarily on the theoretical plane. Waiting on the cold platform was an advanced seminar in metaphysics.
We penetrated Manhattan at dawn—an unpoetic sunrise where New York received us with the characteristic tenderness of a corrections officer. We dragged our rollaways through the purgatory of Penn Station, a concrete bunker where humanity circulates in the dead of night like an army that has lost yet another war.
The hotel was a theological miracle—the type of event no rational mind believes, yet transpires, nonetheless. It was the last available room in Brooklyn, which meant it possessed the moral category of a punitive prison sentence. Bkway Hotel has a third-tier infrastructure with an active aspiration for seventh.
Shortly thereafter, we reached JFK, entering a long-term psychological experiment. We spent the remainder of the siege inside the Delta Sky Club, which, in comparison to the absolute squalor of our previous quarters, manifested as the absolute apex of hospitality.
Consider the terrifying degradation of human ambition: the absolute peak of a high-level strategic mission reduced to a synthetic leather armchair, a cup of purgative coffee, and the abstract promise of a functional USB port.
Sitting there, the VIP lounge became our authentic homeland. The air-conditioning unit was our constitution. The complimentary cookie became our domestic policy.
And, because the universe is scripted by a humorous demon, we still managed to nearly miss the final boarding sequence for São Paulo. The ultimate lesson of the resistance: The journey never terminates when you think it does; it terminates only when you finally purge the illusion of “sufficient time.”
We boarded. Not through operational competence, but through pure, unadulterated logistical mercy. Only to conclude, once back on native soil, that it was to LATAM that we owed our successful re-boarding (following the previous day’s no-show) and the subsequent hop to the BSB Airport. Ironically, it was the only flight of the entire odyssey that departed precisely at the promised hour.
